Instagram recently announced that it was changing its algorithm to ensure that newer posts appeared higher up in users feed.
However, those excited at the prospect that all posts will now appear in chronological order, as they used to be before the monumental switch to a non-chronological feed in March 2016, are likely to be disappointed. Instagram has made it clear this is only a partial roll back and that newer posts are only “more likely” to appear first in feed.
Therefore, with engagement (likes, comments) set to remain one of the seven key factors of the Instagram algorithm, here are a few tips and practical examples to ensure your posts get engaged with and are noticed.
1. Implement video
Due to the fact that videos auto-play as users scroll through their feed, posts that incorporate moving video are more likely to be noticed and engaged with in comparison to photos.
While it’s important that video looks professional, don’t think you need to be (or employ) the next Spielberg to make your film. Hyperlapse / timelapse or even stop-motion videos can be easy and inexpensive to make.

2. Use engagement prompts
In the caption of your post, it’s a great idea to actively ask people to comment by using engagement prompts and/or call to actions.
This can take the form of questions, actively asking for feedback or even question-based competitions.
3. Reply to all
It’s really important that if anyone replies to your post, that you reply to them. It’s that simple. Keeping the conversation going helps to build engagement and helps to keep up the momentum of the post.
Even if the reply doesn’t warrant a written response, a simple brand-relevant emoji (it could be a fist bump, or a kiss) will suffice.
4. Introduce stories
If you haven’t done so already, it’s worth spending the time planning out some Instagram stories which will help to build engagement.
For brands, example stories could include behind the scene images of product photo shoots, staff away days or a launch party. Just ensure the content is on-brand and aligned to your strategy.
5. Spend some cash
Paid adverts are particularly good at helping to drive engagement for time-sensitive posts that need to be in the feed at a specific moment.
